Different types of mediums and some of their additional abilities.
Natural born mediums are born with mediumistic ability and are able to see and hear spirits as very young children.
Trance mediums are those who can enter the trance state either unknowingly or at will [the lowest level of brain wave activity referred to as the Delta state, or the sleep state]. That particular process is sometimes referred to as channeling, or trance channeling.

They may actually allow the spirit access to their body; in this way, the medium offers the spirit 'a temporary vehicle' for use in communicating. By utilizing the mediums’ central nervous system, as well as their vocal chords, the spirit communicator is given permission to speak through the mediums’ voice box. However, this does not necessarily mean that a medium will allow this.
A Physical medium specifically focuses on the physical phenomena aspect of mediumship. This simply means that the goal is for the medium to bring about physical phenomena within the room that others can see, hear and/or feel. Those who are assisting the medium in this manner observe and record anything measurable that takes place in the room, as the medium attempts to prompt spirit activity. All sessions are suggested for audio recording.
Polygraphic medium [sometimes called an automatist] is one who is capable of automatic writing [writing messages from spirit intelligence]. They may also have the ability to draw psychic sketches. These mediums specialize in specific types of communication.
Polyglot medium, one who speaks or writes in tongues [a language that is unknown to the medium in the waking state].
Mental mediums, facilitate a connection via the mind.

Mediums don’t all receive information in exactly the same way... Once a link is created with someone in the afterlife, most of the information comes through to the medium "symbolically". For instance, the symbolic meaning of "a wife" might be a really pretty fancy girl shirt described by one medium, but to another medium, it may be a flower encased in a wedding ring. And since everyone has their own unique symbolism, the interpretation of that symbolism would be specific to the medium experiencing it.
Another tricky part of this process is learning to recognize "switching", meaning when you begin to get information from "another discarnate".
However, the entire process is just like learning anything else, the more practice, the easier it gets.
Someone that calls themselves a clairvoyant/medium, should be able to describe your loved ones from the spirit world and also to describe visually things around your home or family for example.
Some clairvoyant mediums can see a spirit as though the spirit has a physical body. They see the bodily form as if it were physically present.

Other mediums see the spirit in their mind's eye, or it appears as a movie or a television program or a still picture like a photograph in their mind.
There are a few clairvoyant/mediums out there, that aren't in fact either. They may 'read' people, but they may be reading via their psychic or sentient ability and not actually 'seeing' anything at all, or indeed they may not be able to talk with your loved ones in spirit either. This doesn't mean they aren't good readers, it just means they might not be offering you the type of session you were really looking for.
Never be afraid to ask how they work, they should always be more than happy to explain it to you. This way, you know what sort of session you can expect.

Some mediums may also have Premonitions, Precognition and Remote Viewing abilities.
Though similar in nature, premonitions and precognition have only one difference. One ability works by day and the other by night, beyond that there is very little difference between the two.
Remote Viewing (RV), refers to the attempt to gather information about a distant or unseen target using your paranormal, extra-sensory perception or intuitive abilities.
